A bug just won't die and keeps coming back to haunt me. It was caused by a user using the wrong file in the first place. They told me it used to work, but now it didn't, but they didn't tell me they were using a different input file till I'd been working on the problem for a whole ****ing month.
It's reporting too many errors I said, are you sure you're using the right file? Oh yes, it must be the code.
The file you gave me didn't work on the earlier version either, are you sure this is the problem? Oh yes, it worked here just fine, same files and everything, fix it.
So I made the the thing work no matter how stupid the input was.
Now it's too ****ing slow.

I'm currently trying to write a mail informing the user I'm going to undo one months work in one fell swoop, and trying not be all passive aggressive about it.

I think IT and especially IT-support, is one of the worst jobs in the world. Well-paid it might be, but it is a sweat-shop in a modern setting. Ref. See also call-centres.

SC II | Not yet, but it's on my "possibly learn to do" list. Currently I feel like a change of career, I could do with writing a multi million franc earning fart app. Quote: |

| I'm not technically support, but I have to support some of the more specific applications and changes I develop. It always feels kind of personal when someone finds something wrong that I can't identify, I sometimes think they're playing a nasty trick on me. (I know they aren't)

If they object, mutter something about making sure their computer setup (account, environment stuff etc) is the same as yours.
* it gave me great pleasure to write the phrase I used to there

| | My turn
Although I'm heading out of traditional IT at the moment, I'm doing a small web project with a guy who loves Windows and writes Macs off as too expensive.
Every software solution he suggests costs money, and to hammer the point home, last week he bought a PC magazine because the CD that came with it has a couple of Open Source software programs. Both are gratis, free and cost nowt to download and to use.
WTF?
SC: Yes I am considering looking at iPhone apps, but am not going to take the plunge until I get a bit more experience with Apple's development environment under my belt.
