a bit of a damp squid really, especially considering they built a chip for it.

The reports of interest I've read say that it's
  • remarkably quick
  • a consumer device
  • a portable telly
  • it supports the document formats used by Apple's answer to Office (iWork)

I wouldn't underestimate that last point if the thing takes off. Loads of consumers using something other than MS Office... Multilingual too, something the English speaking press doesn't pay much attention to, and to get that with Windows, you need Win7 Ultimate or Enterprise Editions.

In the real news that day Oracle completed the acquisition of Sun Microsystems, which will possibly have a far greater impact on the future of enterprise computing.

The more i think about this the more it makes sense, we have a mac mini at home and a laptop, i use the laptop mostly for web browsing but this I could do on my iphone if it were a lot faster and bigger ( the only two limitations I feel as I type this).

I've never really got the point of ebook readers, carrying around another device that to be honest would be better placed as a larger external screen for my iphone.

Will this thing do tethering? That is important to me.

I think we should think of a new name for it, i sounds like a sanitary towel.

*sings Body-Form theme tune*

As somone who owns enough Apple products to open a small store, i shall not be making a purchase.

When i do sit down to read a good book the last thing i want to do is stare at another screen. Im sure this will work wonders in the practically dead computer tablet market, but i cant see many current Apple customers rushing out to buy this the way they did with the iphone and macmini's.

The ever positve folks at The Economist are suggesting that this will be the end to newspapers........imo i think we are a while off this.

In the meantime, i am just waiting on the new iphone, which hopefully will have a decent camera and flash.

This isn't high on my shopping list either, but then again I got the latest fancy gadgets bit out of my system nearly a decade ago. Thinking back to the iPhone coming out I wasn't interested in that until a friend showed me his jail-broken one. That I could use, so might have a look when and if it becomes available on the iPad.

Then again folks have a way of finding new and unexpected ways of using new technology, so I'll keep an eye on it.

Agreed on the name, iSlate or anything else would have been better.

It may not be a paradigm-shift device like the ipod or even iphone, but it is exactly what I want, and have wanted for many years: a browsing , reading and email tool without the inconvenience of a clamshell and the benefits of the Apple interface- In other words , like the iphone interface but bigger !

I will buy one.
