Default Blu Ray/HD - All That?

I recently bought a few cult and classic films on BluRay, I'm currently watching "The Boys From Brazil", the detail in the video seems astonishing for a film from 1978, really astonishing, apart from the audio, the film looks like it could have been made yesterday.

We all kid ourselves of the benefits of the technology we buy, am I seeing things that aren't there?

I don't think so, Cyrus. We all like to justify our techie toys, of course, but when I compare the normal BBC channels to the BBC HD, there is a significant difference.

I have a popcorn hour and more recently an azbox both of which can play 1080p content. I didn't believe DVD could be improved upon as much as it has but the detail is incredible. It sounds silly but with something fast paced like Batman I feel the detail is almost more than my eyes can absorb, it looks higher quality than real life.

It just makes me think, now that we've moved into the digital age, that a film that existed before this age can still produce such astounding detail.

While I understand the convinience of digital media for the consumer, it makes me wonder whether it's always the best method of production.

I wonder what exactly is the detail available in traditional media. What exactly is the resolution of film, the quality of magnetic tape or vinyl, how much detail do we lose to digitisation?

I don't know wrt to video imaging, but the take-up of higher quality audio has been all but ignored in search of portable or download convenience. MP3 ? What happened to high quality SACD or HDCD ? As someone interested in audio, I find this a real shame.

To be honest I've had poor quality CDs as well, particularly noticeable with "Best Of" collections. Several I bought in the last dozen years or so were so lousy that I got rid of them.

I've no objection to paying extra for quality, but when that isn't there, why bother?
