Although he has a point at a basic level he misses that people might be worried about how their data could be misrepresented or misused.

When a stupid, patronising thing to say:"If you have something that you don't want anyone to know, maybe you shouldn't be doing it in the first place"

CNBC asked "People are treating Google like their most trusted friend. Should they be?" But he answers by scoffing at those who don't trust Google at all.

Whatever happened to personal space, and privacy in its widest sense ?

I'm playing devils advocate, but maybe he is offering advice. He knows the amount of info they have on people, he knows a court could subpoena that info an is issuing a warning.

He has a lot to lose if people don't use his services - he has to inspire confidence

Viable alternative to what, he is leveraging his search engine popularity to gain market entry to cloud computing, or whatever it is called, and cell phone OS both of which have viable competition. If either fail then he is missing a huge piece of the pie - he has better data collection capabilities than the CIA.

He is in advertising.

There is no real alternative to Google for search, Bing is in it's infancy and although not a bad effort is not different enough to make people care, Yahoo ditched their search for Bing, where is the competition?

He doesn't care about cloud computing, he just wants as many mediums as possible to advertise through and can do cheap of free in order to achieve that. The only real competitor (MS) doesn't know how to do free or cheap and are panicking, they have dropped the ball and are so big that corporate momentum is stopping them from picking it up again. Then you have Oracle with no consumer intentions at the moment and IBM who now hate MS and love Linux, but I wouldn't be scared about IBM if I was MS.

So back to the question, if I want an alternative to Google search where do I go? If I want great free hosted email where do I go?

I don't think so - I mean I don't think he sees himself as being in advertising. Making money from it sure but google is leveraging search engine and adding advertising, not the other way round. Like most of these people he sees the internet as a virgin - he just hasn't found the cherry yet. The more people he gets hooked on his medium then the greater the chance he can charge for something rather than earning indirectly.
