Thats funny, It's one of the things on my "to-do" list whilst in the middle of the robbery, quietly break in, steal the gold + cash, make sure no fingerprints left behind, update my facebook page on a pc, leave quietly
Whoops!
I know a woman who has a laptop purely for facebook, nothing else, literally.
She was getting a flight to Cyprus last month and was bringing her laptop, I asked why and she said (SERIOUSLY) "Facebook, why else, I cant live without it"
I thought this was really sad, I mean she couldn't live without this fairly new application that has taken over her life, I like taking a break from a PC completley at times. What was she doing before facebook?
Scarey how technology derails us sometimes from the basic reality checks, instead of talking to someone, we just type into facebook how we feel...

Which means the status update "Jonathan Parker has two new diamond rings" will soon be followed by "Jonathan Parker returns diamond rings" and "Jonathan Parker sits in jail".

It may not be advanced, or even scientific, but it illustrates that if you are inclined, simply making privacy settings on your account does not exclude inferences and assumptions being made about the company you keep.

BigD | I think the worrying thing is not Facebook having access to this information, since in having an account you have agreed to this, it is the fact that an unidentified third party can extract this data.
I'm trying to think how this might work with other data, were I gay I don't think that people being able to identify me as gay though counting my openly gay friends (i.e. those who have offered the information to Facebook) would bother me, can you think of another example of information that could be collected in such a way and used maliciously?

informal networks to detect fraud... there is at least one company that dedicates itself to screen (business) e-mails and social networking places to detect informal channels of communication. Let's say, why is Mary from accounting talking so much with Joe from Marketing and going to parties with Hugh from big Supplier, who happens to have placed a major order with Joe and be the partner of Susie from Auditing? You cannot see them talking, but there is sure a lot odd communication patterns going on (like e-mails), and it is likely that these folks appear tagged in photos or linked as friends.

She was getting a flight to Cyprus last month and was bringing her laptop, I asked why and she said (SERIOUSLY) "Facebook, why else, I cant live without it" | I was trying to find an article I read not long ago about this. Apparently, these sort of personalities are such they need a constant audience to "feel their own feelings". They cannot have an experience and feel, unless they can validate the feeling with an audience, and someone actually tells them how they should feel. For example, her penguin has passed away. Her first reaction is to post Mary's penguin has passed away , because she needs to broadcast before taking any emotional step. Once people starts to empathize with what she should feel awwwwww, poor you, you must feel so sad , the she starts feeling sad. If I remember well, the authors couldn't conclude if this was a cause or consequence. Meaning, if these persons were already like this, and having a captive audience just magnified this. Or, whether having a captive audience just made people need to broadcast at all times.
We had a very good example of this in that other forum we shall not name , that kept us amused for days and days.
