We are going back nine years here: Encryption at the mercy of the law.

BigD | This is what scares me about things like Cumulus points and health insurance. Let's say, for example, that some medical expert suddenly discovers that drinking soya milk causes mental illness (just a hunch). How long do you think that it will take someone at your health insurance company to work out how many soya based cumulus points you've accumulated?
Maybe I'm just being paranoid, but maybe they're all out to screw us |

Maybe I'm just being paranoid, but maybe they're all out to screw us | Yes, but they would have to prove that you were actually consuming them. How many people have a cumulus or a supercard who shop for a whole family?
Still, it's a bit of a scary thought especially if you are scanning 18 bottles of wine through a week...

Not just a specific foodstuff, but any aspect of your consumption, habits or behaviour could be monitored and judged without your knowledge.

And a 31 Jan 2004 article, RFID Tag Hidden in METRO's Loyalty Card (METRO Future Shop in Rheinberg, Germany).
METRO Future Shop also had an RFID Tag Deactivation Station that does not Deactivate Tags
OK, we can avoid that shop, but how about Deutsche Bahn AG, winner of a category in the 2007 Big Brother awards?
Closer to home, Big Brother Awards Schweiz (German only) is perhaps worth a look at.

BigD | Taking us back to the days when we weren't faceless shoppers in large supermarkets, but local people shopping at local stores. The grocer/butcher/etc knew their customers and their buying habits then too. And would also know that we'd always duck off to the village down the road for our weekly 18 bottles of cider....

But I am sure that he wouldn't broadcast that knowledge worldwide or sell it to a corporation for profiling. After all, it's a local shop for local people. We'll have no trouble here.
