In contrast, what could you do legally in a dispute about privacy against FaceBook, given that they are located in the US?
There's a broader issue here about potentially confidential data crossing international borders, especially in the light of the continual reports from the UK of such data getting "lost", credit card details being hacked in the US etc. Quote:

It is what you make it. | You may trust FB with what data you yourself put on, but "I'm not seeing a lot of that" implies that you are seeing some of it. For example, a colleague once posted the GPS location of our office on t'internet, out of naivety and bragging about his latest toy. He simply hadn't thought about the possible consequences.

What do you suggest for the worriers out there?

Founder Mark Zuckerberg reversed changes to the site's terms and conditions after spending just two hours reading a selection of users' entries.
He said: "It does just seem to be a lot of cat pictures, a smattering of furious extremists and some people who have taken time to tell the world that they're about to head off to the gym."

Far worse things could happen on the internet than someone getting access to your FB details, what if AOLs little leak was repeated with Google?
Best unplug that computer from the net and throw it out the window if you ask me.

Just came across this, 10 Privacy Settings every Facebook user should know.
I don't implement all of these, some seem a little over the top, but worth knowing.

I've been revisiting Linkedin over the last few days.
My view on this is quite different to that of Facebook. The information I have opted to put on there, although personal, is audited before I put it up there. I am starting to find this a useful resource for keeping track of recruiters.
I think that the objective of an online resource is very relevant when we talk about privacy, the knowledge that Linkedin is a site that aims to display me professionally ensures I watch what I write.

The problem is , you have to give enough information (including your name) to make it professionally useful, making it possible to uniquely identify you and relate it to your Facebook (or other) wilder exploits...
Ah..... you're the peachy from Zürich that works at X,. originally from Y in Uk that....

I started using LinkedIn some months ago and I really like it. I actually think that LinkedIn and Facebook complement each other very well. Quote:

BigD | If you were to Google my name Linkedin appears second to wretched Facebook, but I think I have a limited setup on Facebook. Other than that I share my uncommon name with another bloke who is also in IT. To dig dirt out on me you would have to look a bit deeper and anybody I'd want to work for would understand that people treat their social and work life seperately and would only be concerned if it appeared I didn't make a distinction.

If I look at the people who work for me, I think I would be relieved if I saw they liked to let their hair down and be a bit raucous in their free time. This is somehow reflected in their working week in that they are sociable, well settled into their jobs and work well together.
Scarily normal for people in their late twenties and early thirties.
If I saw pics of my CEO, however, dressed in women's clothing with his head down a toilet "shouting for ralph", that might change the way we interact a wee bit.
I know that won't happen because he doesn't subscribe to any networking sites so all his cross-dressing vomit pics are probably safely stored on his hard drive...
