Well, I finally joined Facebook after pressure from a number of people whose opinions I usually trust, and to say it's a let down is something of an understatement.

What a pile of utter ****!

So far, I've learnt that it's snowing in England, that somebody's dog farted, that someone's child is oozing snot, and that somebody else has 'poked' me, apparently.

I'm also receiving random requests for 'friendship' from random weirdo friends of friends that I met once at a party and never liked even then.

I can barely contain my indifference.

Is there something I'm missing here? I mean, the people who recommended it to me are normally pretty on-the-ball when it comes to useful and interesting stuff.

I had you down as one of more refinement. Facebook is about you. You are required to populate it with all stuff about you , whose sole purpose is to impress friends, family , acquaintances, exes, crushes, random loonies, and people that don't like you.*

We are all familiar for your writing talent, but I suggest you may find such an environment all too much. The main distinction I make between sites like forums and those like Facebook, is that on forums we at least discuss something rather than oneself, and mostly manage to avoid self-obsession and all-round showing off. Such behaviour is, I am sure you will agree, is bad form for a chap that is not American.

Good words, I was thinking the very same yesterday as I sat in the hottub outside my St Moritz chalet admiring the landscape and drinking Cristal .

I've seen worse than that. It is even worse when they try and wrap it up in "just thought you'd like to know" or "keeping my friends up to date" or "I don't mean to boast but..." or "we went from Bali direct to Bangkok and spent three weeks in each, but didn't enjoy it".

Even worse than that is when there are comments that hint, but in such an obvious way as to the glamorous exploits of the Facebooker:

"I know what you mean but there are more than 23 dialects"
"airports are a pain, especially when you have to make three changes to smaller aircraft"

or worst of all, the dreaded :

"here are my photos".

At least it is an improvement on having to sit next to their tanned body and be prompted to actually look at them....

It's all an act to show-off, but (if you're not American) you must make appear like you are merely satisfying their (hitherto unexpressed) interest in your exploits.

You know a lot about FB BigD I might look you up as you surely must have an account with that much knowledge of it then you can look at all my 'vacation' pics and be very jealous at the countries I've visited

I have examined Facebook at some length, though you will find no boasts from me on there. I'm sure County Durham is very nice though
