but to be realistic, nowadays almost every school kid is on some sort of social network, has a mobile phone, access to internet etc
there is no way to disassociate from this fact.
an example is botellon parties, the numbers amassed in such a short time - this would not have been possible when you were a kid

Likewise, in the same vein, these parties are highly visible, and so more easily controlled by the police, not sure how I feel about that.

Cyrus, I was interested to see what people think about a link between bullying and subsequent behaviour. School shooting perpertrators often leave some message be it a video sent to a local TV station or a posting on some forum. I think there is a link between how a person is treated by those they aquaint in life and how they develop from their interactions with others. I think that this is also true of virtual encounters. I am not saying there is a definite link between accumulating more "groans" than you wish and immediately buying a Kalashnikov but I do accept that this could be implied by my earlier post.

I have never seen it, for want of a better expression. I don't like the idea of being up there for all to see so I've ignored all invitations to be someones face book friend. I'm not into gadgets and technology and other fandangleries.

I have been a long-time user of LinkedIn and Xing for my business contacts. I started hearing about MySpace and Facebook a few years ago but felt that I did not need another social network. But I kept receiving invitations to join FB and finally joined as a bit of an experiment to see how many of my business vs personal contacts would contact me on FB. I thought it would be weighted towards personal, and that FB was considered a bit 'lightweight' as a business tool.
Have to say that I was dead wrong, as almost all of my business contacts can be found on FB. It has become almost a de facto communications platform among tech entrepreneurs and investors. Additionally, David Kirkpatrick of Fortune Magazine is writing a book called The Facebook Effect... Les articles de The Facebook Effect, by David Kirkpatrick | Facebook
Some interesting commentary to be found there.
I try to keep my personal info pretty well scrubbed. HR and recruiters are using the internet quite a bit now. Here are a couple of funny stories: Losing Facebook Is Worse Than Losing a Job president of facebook CNN Political Ticker: All politics, all the time Blog Archive - Obama speechwriter Favreau learns the perils of Facebook - Blogs from CNN.com

Putting my Schnappi head on for a moment: Has anyone thought about the possibility that Facebook was set up by shadowy agents of darkness in order to keep track of people who, quite willingly, put all their doings online for all the world to see?
Not that the shadowy agents of darkness are necessarily interested in what a fellow drank the night before.... but I'm sure that's not all they could glean from the site.
Worrying. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if the entire internet were set up with such surveillance in mind...
They're watching us.
Quick, hide the cheese!
