February 28, 2010, is RARE DISEASE DAY BASEL/ZURICH, a series of activities designed to raise awareness among the general public about rare diseases and their impact on people’s lives. The event in Basel will take place on the Universität Basel,

Throughout the day there will be special celebrity appearances and prizes given away, as well as a children‘s art display. The day’s events will culminate in a symposium featuring researchers, physicians, companies and politicians talking about strengthening the research efforts in Switzerland for rare diseases
What will be happening?
_10:00 – 16:30 Educate and Experience (games and art)
Through art work and interactive activities, all visitors will gain a better appreciation for rare diseases and why it is important to establish Centers of Expertise for research, diagnosis and treatment.
_13:30 – 16:30 Symposium: the Swiss Vision- Centers of Expertise for Rare Diseases
Researchers, physicians, host organizers and politicians will unveil how the funds raised from this year’s RARE DISEASE DAY BASEL/ZURICH, and future ones to come, will help establish Switzerland as a beacon for rare disease research, diagnosis and treatment. This session is open to the public, however it may be more suited for a mature audience
_11:00 – 16:00 Food Court:
You will have the opportunity to sample healthy dishes prepared from different groups. The different food stations will be located conveniently next to the day’s activities.
_Children’s Art Display
The Rare Disease Day organizers invited students to draw a picture that shows their support for a child who has a rare disease. The pictures will be displayed during the Rare Disease Day and the assistants will be able to vote for their favorite. The top three artists will win a prize and an invitation to attend an announcement ceremony with their families.
_Prizes and Celebrity Guests:
During the day’s events, there will be many prizes given out randomly to visitors, as well as special celebrity appearances.

Where's the money going?
All funds raised by RARE DISEASE DAY BASEL-ZURICH will be divided evenly among the organizers -- the ACCESS! Association, the Gebert Rüf Foundation and the orphanbiotec Research Foundation -- and used to support rare disease research. (Although industry will be participating in the event, none of the funds raised will go to industry.) This event is taking place under the patronage of the Basel Department of Health and the University of Basel.
