Default Linguistic and cultural howlers at work

We attended a presentation on house mortgages today, and at a certain point the Swiss presenter wanted to point out the differences between Swiss mortgages and German ones.

"Any Germans here? Hands up you Germans!".

With a diet of war films as a youngster in the UK, it took great self control not to fall off my seat laughing.

(It was presented in German, but the phrase he used for "Hands up" was "Hände hoch!", which is what my father was taught before being despatched to the trenches in WW2)

He meant to say tenches, as they had truly gone fishing in WWII.

Just a phrase. There's rather more detail than I wish to know on Wiki.

My father didn't talk much about the war, except that he was in Italy.
