Zürich City Hallenbad Closing

I am somewhat upset today, as I found out that the City Hallenbad: a 50m swimming pool right in the city centre of Zürich is to close - supposedly for renovations.

Familiar as I am with swimming pool closures for months when you most want to use them (like summer), it still came as a bit of a shock to note that the swimming pool will be shut from 3rd May 2010 until "Summer 2012".

I always consider this facility a jewel in the crown of Zürich city centre and am really annoyed

I will be surprised if it reopens again with the excellent 50m pool intact, untarnished by slides and wave machines.

Never mind the summer: you will a few _other_ pools availble. But, where I am supposed to swim in Winter?

I am really annoyed....

What needs to be renovated, and why will it take so long??? Are "they" starting to prepare the city for an olympic application?

It sounds like the original layout will remain but will be modernized whilst enhancing its elegance....

There's more info here but no explanation why such modern elegance needs so much time to realize...

eh? this make me wonder as you living in oerlikon hit the city bath?
i make the effort to swim 4times a week in oerlikon. far better facility
as the city bath gets pretty packed 5-7pm and you end up swimmng head to others toes. and as relaxed as i am... i get annoyed with all those (supposed to be gays) stares in the shower. it has been worse, but still...

i agree that the location is good, very central 50m pool.

what really upsets me is that the result will be a jampacked oerlikon pool...

Oerlikon is no longer my local pool, and The City Hallenbad would be the one I use the most. You are right about the Oerlikon pool be jampacked, because all the clubs and clases are being directed to it...
