The gratis stuff keeps piling up, first it was the swine flu vaccination, now it is a PO box. I went to our local post yesterday and applied for one, fully expecting it to cost 50chf a month, but, no. Gratis. Hooray.

Yeah, we got one 2 years ago and they're happy to give them free as it cuts down on the number of posties who have to deliver by hand.

It is simply them being pragmatic and saving themselves money. The cost of delivering letters to BigD Acres Farm on the mountaintop in Appenzell will be dramatically reduced if we can persuade Farmer BigD to use a PO Box. In fact slap-my-thigh,we'll let him have one gratis and make him think we are doing him a favour and hope he doesnt know about our madate to deliver to all citizens - however inaccessible - for one postage stamp price....dress me up and call me Susan if it ain't so.

Oh I see.... and the tactic would be to slap a hefty fine on said fine farmer should he fail to empty his PO box at 'reasonable' intervals (in fine print: hourly at least)? There's got to be a catch here somewhere.

There is a catch. The boxes are all taken so I had to get my mail delivered to the post office. Cost? 30 chf a year and no reductions for only having six months.
