Question Urnash Appenzell? Anyone every been to the fastnacht thingy there?

Says it all in the title really, because we are leaving (I have to keep saying that, I am so ) I have decided that we really ought to see as much of CH as possible. Somebody showed me this in a book and I thought me and the girl would go. Mr L can't, he has to go to work. It would be an early start for us, on the train at 7ish and arriving around 10.30, is it worth it?

Never been but it's quite local to us. I actually really enjoy these small town festivals better than the city ones. Make the effort to get there and the effort to take part and become a local. Somethings I think us auslanders miss out on a lot by being too shy to join in. I've helped with running the cows down from the alps to flums once and although I had no clue what was going on I was greated at the end as one if the "gang".

Is it the 13th you are heading up? A small chance I may be able to join you. Either way, take part as a local, not as a tourist and you'll be surprised how these country folk will take to you

Thanks Herr Cheese, I am going to go to the station this evening and buy the tickets. it could be a bit tight otherwise.
I am looking forward to this immensly, not sure about getting involved though, I can't imagine that the good people of Appenzell would be happy at me grabbing a part of their costume to wear
Girl is less enthused about it, we need to leave our flat at 7, she is generally surfacing then.
I'll try to put some picture up and will def look out for you. I know what you look like.

Well, we went and I can't recommend it highly enough. There was a sense of menace about the 'ugly' people and a sense of 'not quite rightness' about the beautiful people. They are all men! We had a really interesting time and then got some Appenzell cheese from a dairy shop, missed the train, got off at the wrong stop and encountered a random loono who wanted to take me and the girl home. We declined. Finally reached our flat at 6ish after leaving around midday.

And surprisingly my local hostelry celebrated "Old Sylvester" last night. The place was packed and they'd laid on extra bar staff to cope.

Perhaps it's catching on.
