I used to do a lot of sea fishing when I was a 14-year old kid. I miss the sea. The fishing obviously forced an interaction with it that was very pleasurable.

I have never seen the attraction of river or lake fishing....

I can agree with lake fishing, although mayfly on the lake is supposed to be very exciting as the fish come to the surface. River fishing, certainly on the fly, means covering water and whilst you don't battle the elements, at least not in trout fishing, you interact with the water and surrounding nature far more that you can do whilst, for instance, hiking.

Even more so if a boat is involved. The term "messing about with boats" is widely misunderstood; it is a perfectly constructive way to spend your life.

I've fond memories of a few seaside holidays, one in particular when I was about 10. We took one of those fishing trips designed for dads and sons, with all the tackle and bait provided, showed us the ropes etc. It was hugely enjoyable and definitely contributed to my love of boats,

I once shared a house with a lad who had a season ticket on a local reservoir, and didn't really enjoy it either. On the other hand, I did like fishing in trout streams in Bavaria where we could say "What shall we have for dinner?" and then go out and catch it. This was using spinners which is much more active than sitting on the bank of a reservoir waiting for a bite.
