Default Zurich to be recommended?

Hi,

I have just come back from my first weekend in Switzerland; Zurich to be precise. I got a really good vibe about it. What with the lakes, the glorious weather (granted I know it will be cold in winter which is also a plus point for ski-ing), the women, beer & just the general feel about the place.

I'm committed to working in Brussels for the next year so hope I do get some vibe from it soon but I have to say that Zurich is definetly on my list of places to live.

I also have to assume that I went to Zurich as a "tourist" and sometimes places are different if you live there..

Anyone have anything bad to say about Zurich or anything in particular I should look out for because so far, I can only see good things on the Horizon?

People are rude, service is lousy and it is probably the most boring place on earth to live. You asked for it :-)

That is surely sarcasm coming out?!

Although I find that service in Europe in general in pretty lousy.
In Brussels, the waiters look at you like you have urinated all over their restaurant floor before expecting a tip!

I completely disagree here, I would live elsewhere if I believed it to be true. I think there are plenty of opportunities to do constructive "stuff" (sports, general outdoor things) it just depends if you take them.

Nightlife should not be compared to a UK city though.

Not really. It is my personal view of the bad things of living in Switzerland. Doesn't mean there aren't any good things of course but those weren't what you asked for ;-)

No I appreciate your honesty, all places in the world have good/bad points.

I know for example, here in BE, You have to pay 40 euros for 10 big bags for the rubbish - I hate that rule and dont follow it plus everything seems to shut down at 6pm and Sundays - Not that I'm sounding like a moaning ex-pat or anything!

These are just things/rules you have to deal with...

Service in Europe is expected to be bad but I am thinking (expecially with Zurich) that the positive points outweight the negative

Mr Brussels, you did see Zurich at its best - the people are a lot more chilled and happy when the weather's good.

I'd say Zurich is a great place to live if you can get out of it (and the country) once in a while and go e.g. to London for a bit of 'big city life'.

It's easy to get to know a lot of people quickly if you hang out with the expat community. The Swiss are a harder nut to crack and to really make friends with them takes time and persistance, but is not impossible.

I think you could have described Zug then. Rubbish bags are either 29 or 39 chf for 10, everything does close at 6 and on Sundays as well as the many religious holidays. Zurich always seems a lot more of a happening place than where I live, lots more open on a Sunday and fewer religious days. I think that had Mr L's job not been based in Zug we would have lived (or at least tried to) near the centre of Zurich.
