Default Good cars for winter

Some friends of ours bought a cheapo second-hand 4WD Subaru Justy and that little thing can drive anywhere in any conditions.

Is that the fan club populated by lardy men who drive a souped up Impreza with blingy gold alloys?

Quality...

Well in fairness to Subaru they do offer a no nonsense reliable 4x4 that will actually do what its supposed to do. The number of them to be seen on the roads in Graubunden says something for their effectiveness in winter driving.

Oh, do they perform better than a Hummer or a Porche Cayenne perchanc?

Well seeing as a Hummer couldn't pull the skin off a banana, I would say in real terms yes.

Also, I think all of the Hummers and Hot Chilli Peppers driving on the roads in Graubunden have Zurich plates!!! The locals who have to deal with the snow and narrow steep roads going up the side of random mountains seem to invariable go for their trusty Subaru.

<Whisper> I have heard that the Cayenne actually is functional off road though!

Hummers are ineffective because of their width not stradding the track properly in a convoy (or any muddy track/road that has been used before) and Cayennes are for dickheads without the courage of their convictions that want the image of a sportscar, but want the superior vantage point of a 4x4.

Subarus are actually pretty good cars that only their mother could love. I have tried and tried to find one I find attractive, but their ugliness extends across the whole range.

That may be as they are not really cars, just bankers bonuses. Well that's my theory anyway.
