Problem posting here from an iPhone

I've noticed that when I try to post messages here, or reply to PM's on my iPhone the typing is very slow - in that there is a 1 or 2 second delay between hitting the key and letter displaying. Sometimes it'll do a quick rush and catch up but it makes for frustrating typing, and many typo's.

I don't have a problem posting messages on other sites and forums from my iPhone, so is there something running here in the background that my iPhone doesn't like? Could it be the smilies on the right?

Anyone else noticed this?

Also iPhone related, I couldn't log into the site the other day. It would accept the login details, give me the usual welcome page, then drop back to the guest page again.

I too occasionally post with an iphone and find it pretty frustrating - more to do with entering field details with and iphone keyboard obscuring the field than anything else. That said I have noticed the delay effect, which I also see on other sites and applications like Youtube.

If there is demand we may develop and offer a simplified ShootingTheCheese interface for mobile users that do away with the animations and graphics which are probably the source of the latency.

Ditto - can be a real pain - what I tend to get sometimes is that the delete key goes haywire and delete everything you have just written. I think it has something to do with the combination of entry field and that fact that I tend to hold the phone in the horizontal

It's not StC specific Jolly it's to do with low memory, and yes it's really annoying. A good way to tell it's low on memory is that when you close the browser, then reopen it the page refreshes since the phone doesn't have enough memory free to keep the current page there. You'll notice that it is not a problem directly after an iPhone reboot.

I get this a lot, and sometimes it clearing cookies doesn't resolve it. I haven't looked into it too much to be honest but it's intermittent, my only theory is that it is to do with moving between network locations. I don't know of another forum running the same version of vBulletin as us to compare with.

This is incredibly annoying and has happened a few times to me.


I think we need to look at all these problems and come up with a decent solution if the demand is there, i think quite a few of us use iPhones.

Jolly I looked into the problem logging in further. It only occurs on the 3G connection, try wifi without changing anything on the phone and it should log straight in. I have the same problems on some other forums.

I have no problem logging in (I have a bookmark to usercp on the home screen) but typing this has a lag which is the problem. I tried with other web sites and forums and don't have a prob which made me think it was something specific here. I'm on Swisscom but using the home wireless right now

As you originally mentioned it could be the animated smilies then. I'll ask BigD about the elusive iPhone skin and if not look to rejig the smilies so they play nicer with iPhone.

We are going to try some stuff on our test server and see if it improves the situation. We don't want to cramp anyones kneejerk or off-the-cuff posting or spontanaiety by them having time to read what they are typing.
