Default Fine Swiss Cheeses

I normally put in a cheese order with Jolly for Xmas, and feast on fine British Cheddar as a treat to myself. This year I'd like to compliment it with a samples of decent Swiss cheeses.

Are there any you recommend in particular, or any recommendations about where to buy. I remember Jolly spoke highly of some guys selling Oberlander cheese at the Xmas markt but I can't remember their details.

Tritt at the Viadukt stock some excellent Swiss cheeses.

My personal favourite is the Belper Knoll, which is a very hard, crumbly cheese encased in pepper. I like it because it reminds me of Derbyshire.

Some people are easily pleased like that.

I don't eat much cheese to be honest but I remember being amazed by the Gruyere bought from a stall in the town when I visited. it was sooooo different from the packaged stuff. The overwhelming flavour was nuts with a creamy richness.

I lack enthusiam to experiment or try new products where one cannot try or even examine the range goods before purchase and those good are often outwardly similar (eg pharmacies and cheeseshops). As single sample of cheese is nice, but I still would like a "selection box"

For me the best Swiss cheese is of a style that most Swiss folk will tell you doesn't exist. It's a blue called Blaues Wunder Bio. It's made by a chap in the Emmental who also makes a non Bio version (it's not just the milk is different, the shape and recipe also differs).

It's almost as good as some of my blue cheeses

There's a fine one, and I'm featherbrained and can't remember the name**
It's a soft cheese made with mustard seeds, delightful with salty crackers and a glass of Pinot Noir.

** this is why I prefer to help in the kitchen at cheese events, instead of even trying to pronounce those fancy names

Actually they are at the Zurich HB Wednesday market and they are called Naturli. They also have some good cheeses from Toggenberg, my favouites are soft sheeps milk ones.

That is a lovely speciality cheese made by 2 young guys in the Emmental. I met one of them who has an Irish mother, he speaks English with a very broad Irish accent.

We're fond of various alpine cheeses from Ticino and Grischun, and there's a great blue-goat cheese from Mesolcina that I usually get at various fall and Christmas markets(never found it in stores), plus any and all aged goat cheese we can find.
