Default For foodies. Zurichs new Viadukt market opens Sept 4th

Actually Switzerlands first purpose built indoor food market is nearing completion and will open on Saturday 4th September.

The Viadukt is a development of funky but affordable shops and studios in the old railway arches crossing Heinrichstrasse and Josefstrasse and at the Limmatstrasse end where the arches converge, the Market Hall has been built.

We will have 2 stalls selling our British farmhouse cheese and some ale, we also plan to sell proper cheese and chutney baguettes and mini Ploughmans lunches to take away at lunchtime. Also in our "island" will be the Pie Shop and a guy selling Highland Beef. The architects are calling us "The British Aisle"

The Strudel Hut will also be present and "Slow Food" are taking a few stalls. We have a stall holders meeting there tomorrow so I'll post an update Thursday.

The opening day will be quite a party with live music and loads of freebies and tasters. We'll be serving Blue Stilton, scooped from the cheese, with oat cakes and Port Wine. It'll be served the "proper" way, and for free.

hope to see some cheese shooters there, identify yourselves as such and you'll walk away with a free lump of cheddar.!

It sounds good, but what is Uncle Fester doing serving at the stall on the right ? We should be told.

I live about 150 meters from your stall, Mr. Jolly. So I expect to see you more often!

The new shops under the Viadukt are nicely done, but bring on the food!

Looking forward to the opening, and wishing you all the best. With your personality, witty banter and excellent cheeses , I am sure it'll be a huge hit! It's sure to be one of our favourite places.

Very jealous. Mr L was sent to the shops a couple of days ago, the list included cheddar (or hard cheese), he came back with some ready sliced dayglo orange soapy tasting stuff. His explation included phrases like 'I didn't want to bother the woman on the deli counter' and 'I don't speak Flemish' these arguments fall down on so many levels. He is not in my good books.

I was in a (spiffingly fine) hotel at the weekend and ordered the cheese platter. It was like rubber. Inedible. The cheese didn't taste too good either..

Looking again at the picture above, it does look a bit...sterile. I would have though they would have gone for industrial chic with more exposed stone and pipework. This would emphasise the right-on ye-olde-shoppe quaintness of the atmosphere. To put an office gallery and office lighting throughout....it could be anywhere but with arched doorways. It is a bit too clean for a market hall. I hope this is not another example of the swiss not "getting" a concept that works so well in other cities. Prague is the Meister of the under-the-arches concept. Even Spitalfields market in London fell into the trap of modernising a market-hall institution and replace spit (sic) and sawdust with shop chains and mass produced "craft" items.

Anyhow, I am sure that the range of food on offer at Hardbruecke will be worth the excursion, but we shall see shortly....
