Default The beer thread

This isn't a thread about getting drunk that we have previously got criticised for more about different real beers, their individual merits and basically anything that goes with it.

I am now of the belief that there is no best beer, only beers to suit moods moments and situations. In fact I would say if you really like beer it would be silly to have a favourite beer as such. As I discussed in the events thread a moment ago I had a very crisp refreshing lager tonight, and part of the crispness was created by but also caused gassiness. This was not a criticism of the lager, but made me think that there are certain constraints you work within when brewing beer that place you in a triangle of options.

What are your thoughts on this? Is this why we identify mass produced beer to be sub standard, because it is right in the middle of the triangle?

And left me in my stately home,
Lazing on a sunny afternoon.
And I cant sail my yacht,
Hes taken everything Ive got,
All Ive gots this warm bottle of feld-schlöss-chen.

Agree peachy - there are times I'd go a long way for a Kilkenny, and other times/moods it leaves me cold.
But.... are beer 'moods' any different to, for example, wine moods? I love a great 'sticky' dessert wine at times, but prefer the crispness of a chenin blanc at other times, even disregarding the food accompanying said wine.

I sitting at home getting slowly drunk on a mixture of canned Boddingtons and Murphys listening to music that makes me maudlin. In fact I'm on my last can so I'm going to have to switch to the half-finished bottle of red wine and after that I'm going to despair, maybe I can coax some brake-fluid from the neglected MG in the garage.

I choose Boddingtons and Murphys, and in Paddy's in Winterthur, Cafferys because they are thick beers and I really can't take the thin standard Swiss stuff any more.

By the way, if somebody wants a seriously good beer: try Bun Tschlin.

I feel your pain, I currently have so much choice it's untrue, and I'm not a decisive person. Mrs P keeps bringing me a selection of beers at varying temperatures to choose from and I don't know what to drink next. I'm drinking more Paulaner whilst I mull over it.
