Top 10 quintessential English foods - Times Online

I pretty much agree with all of them but not the order. God I miss a good Yorkshire chippy.

Jolly, how do you rate the Cheddar listed at number 10?

Where is the CTM ? It was designed for the English. Curry is the most popular dish in England.

I had a number of the things on the list at the weekend (with the possible exception of grouse, as my beating boy was taken ill) and there is no substitute for a 63, and a 10. (Lamb Madras, and Chinese Special Fried Rice crowned with fried-egg)

Montgomerys is generally thought of to be the best. I've had it here 3 times and I just find it to be too crumbly with too many blue veins. Of the top 3 West Country cheddars I prefer Westcombe and from the rest if the UK Lincolnshire Poacher and Isle of Mull.

If they had done the top 20 we could have included Stilton and Lancashire Hotpot (damn that's hard to say for a Yorkshireman)

In the same vein I also admit to liking Lancashire cheese. It was traditional in our neck of the woods to have it with Christmas cake and mince pies (prise the tops off the mince pies, pop in a slice of cheese apiece, put the lids back on and reheat in the oven), though for the latter Wensleydale is also excellent.

For the top 20 I would suggest other fish dishes as well as the traditional fish'n'chips.

I had pork pie on Friday. I had forgotten how horrid it was although, having said that, I once made some by hand. It was a 63 day process (or at least it felt like that). Not bad but too much effort to do on a regular basis.
For me, salt and vinegar crisps are very english. I am hoping to introduce the girl to a childhood favourite. Get a bloomer loaf, chop it in half through the middle, pull the bread out so you have a pocket, take pocket either to the baker to be filled with tomato soup or the chippy to be filled with chips and eat. I am surprised I never got rickets or scurvy, either of those was my lunch while at secondary school.

Curry is often described as the English national dish because it is the most popular food but the description is a bit tongue in cheek I think since the popularity of Curry is relatively recent. Many would consider food more along the lines of stew and roast as traditional English dishes.

I would swap 1 with 2 and 3 with 10. Other than that, spot on I'd say.

If anyone is interested, I found a German brand of "English Style" (yes it says that) Salt & Vinegar crips. As cheap as ....chips.
