I agree, but will add that the name "Melton Mowbray" does little for me, as my only experience of it is the mass produced stuff in cellophane wrapping sold by supermarkets and corner shops. The photos in the link to Mrs King's look more like it though.

I give you (are you listening Jolly?):

The Celebrated Pork Pie Establishment, Skipton

There's a history of pork pies at that link which is worth a read.

P.S. for the photographers here, the treakearth.com/gallery site is a nice find - top notch photos from around the world, with accompanying text, photographer's notes and viewer comments

Personally Greenhalgh meat-and-potato pies (or potato-and-meat if you are constrained by EU legislation) is for me the best food that reminds me of England. Steamy shortcrust pastry with peppery mince and sweetness of the potato.

In answer to the question: I did.

Ah, Greenhalgh's in Notlob?

Now, meat and potato pie brings back fond memories of school dinners, which at our place were pretty good. Served with peas and lashings of gravy (about half a gravy boat would do), second helpings always available, the shortcrust meat and potato pie had to be the best dish out of that kitchen*. To this day I believe that both meat and potato pie and Cornish pasty are best cooked in a catering sized baking tray (also experienced in a hotel I lived in for a while).

* The head cook obviously believed in a balanced diet; meat and potato pie was normally followed by prunes or rhubarb
