Default Bread - alarming length that some can be kept

I know that a lot of people moan about how quickly freshly baked unsliced bread goes stale, but I've just found half a loaf of 'sandwich bread' that had a use by date of mid February but remains soft. Could still be edible, I am not going to test out this theory myself but, I do find it quite worrying. There must be oodles of preservative in it no signs of mold on it whatsoever. YIKES. I give this stuff every day to the girl.

Is that the same as the "Toast" bread? That stuff keeps for ages, I'm ashamed to say I've eaten it after several weeks open.

It still makes for awful toast.

Yes, toast bread aka sandwich or american sandwich bread. Kept in plastic bag in cupboard. So dark, but warm. Ideal conditions for mould to spread itself around. (is it mould or mold?)

We keep ours in the freezer and just get out slices as we need them (sometimes you have to chip a couple off if they are frozen together) but we only toast that stuff.

Coop do other "toastbreads" ranging from white, but in different sizes, to brown bread.

The brown slices make toast for which you need incisors like an adult lion to eat, however, but eaten together with a tin of baked beans normally softens it up a bit.

I always used to freeze bread in the UK but I don't buy sliced bread here.

The bread that you cook yourself is the best solution to long life bread IMO.

I do generally keep it in the freezer (along with the grown up crusty unsliced stuff) but this one evaded the radar. Might have to start making my own again

Aldi have some nice soft sliced brown and white bread in, almost resembling the bread from back home, unfortunately i rarely eat bread and they only do huge loafs so I didn't get any - but it looked good....

Be careful to read the dates though. Was there on Saturday (21st) and most of it had an expiration date of that very day! Even the box under was the same thing.

I have a feeling that because it was one of the new Aldis they are still getting to grips with stock control.
