Default Tap Water, what info am I missing?

Coming from a city where the tap water resembles something like the contents of a swimming pool, I really do enjoy Swiss tap water (Zurich region at least). So it amazes me when I go shopping to see people buying (multiple) trolley loads of large still water bottles. I really do find this unfathomable, it's not like we are living in a third world country.

500ml bottles on the go or glass bottles for the dinner table, fine, but why so much still water?

I don't get it either. More money than sense? Uninformed people who belieive the propaganda that Evian really is angel-p1ss that will extend your life expectancy up to 500 years?? They all have a share in plastic-bottle factories???
The water here is to die for. Evertime I contemplate returning to that city you were refering to, I think of the water, or lack there of, back home and promiss myself never to leave this oasis.

An engineer in the water treatment firm I used to work for told me once that whilst mains water is constantly monitored for contamination, bottled water plants only have inspections every 3 to 6 months then he did that Swiss thing where they tug at the skin under their eye with the index finger.

I, too, cannot understand why people buy bottled water - the impact on the environment of those plastic bottles must be huge, especially those posh waters which are flown in from somewhere in the South Pacific. Sick, sick, sick.

Drink beer (from the pump, of course)!

Yes agree.... tap water here is excellent. I can understand the procurement of water 'with gas' but bottled still water ????

The cost of a years supply of bottled water would probably cover the installation of a high quality plumbed water filter, not that it's needed. So no it doesn't make sense on any level.

While I like the taste of the tapwater here, we run it through a Britta filter and put it in the refrigerator. Easier on the espresso maker if we filter out the calc.

Taste is great, hardness is not. We use a filter which is changed every four weeks but, as it gets closer to the end of the month, there is a visible calc build up in the kettle.

I actually like bottled still water every now and again. The first office I worked in here had iron water pipes; it was the job of the first person in on a morning to run off the rusty water which had accumulated overnight. I wonder how common iron water pipes are here. We did use that water for the coffee machine, but put it through a Brita filter first.

It is what you probably would translate as "flat water".
